No.28

Yunnanfu No. 41.

Sir,

British Consulate,

Tengyueh,

12th July 1939.

With reference to my despatch No.41 of 26th

May, I have the honour to transmit herewith a list

of the arms and ammunition transported from Lashio to

Chefang from 19th February, (the date of despatch of

the first consignment), up to the end of May 1939. The

list has been abstracted, as before, from details

kindly supplied by the Superintendent, Northern Shan

States, and supersedes previous lists submitted. The

Superintendent reports the total volume of military

supplies carried over this route up to the end of May

as 10,022 metric tons of which 5,037 were transported

during May. The Chinese Customs no longer receive

notification of the transport of these munitions and

are able to take practically no cognisance of them.

South West Transportation Company officials are

noticeably unhelpful to a body which does, after all,

unavoidably employ Japanese on its Shanghai

Inspectorate staff.

2. By all accounts the onward carriage from

His Excellency,

Sir Archibald Clark Kerr, K.C.M.G.,

etc., etc., etc.,

British Embassy,

Shanghai.
